Grant Scheme

The Lizzie Russell Oral History Grant Scheme

Purpose

This grant scheme aims to foster small  oral  history  initiatives in South Australia. The Oral  History Association of Australia (South Australian Branch) wishes to support, assist and help develop oral  history  projects in this State. The grant scheme is funded by sales of the Oral History Handbook by Beth  M. Robertson.

We hope that the scheme fills a gap left by the closure of many federal and state funding options and helps revive an important means of recording South Australia’s history. We encourage all prospective oral  historians to join our Association so that we can help fulfill these objectives.

Lizzie Russell Oral History Grant 2010

It was great to have a number of applications for this grant, and because we are in a healthy financial state thanks to sales of the Oral History Handbook we have decided to assist two projects this year and offer free oral history training workshop places to others.

Congratulations go to Christeen Schoepf for her imaginative project in which she is uncovering the stories of the mayor’s chair of Port Pirie. The chair was made from timbers salvaged from a wreck off the coast. She is interviewing people who have come in contact with the chair, not only mayors but others including people on council, the cleaners and people affected by mayoral/council decisions. ($500)

We are also pleased to assist the Adelaide Harmony Choir in undertaking the first oral history project about a choir such as this in South Australia. ($300)

We look forward to hearing more about these projects next year.
